Why The Media May Be Harming Your Mental Health

Ah, Social Media! All of us have unlimited access to news and media from all across the globe, and it’s all packed into a device that’s small enough to fit into our pockets.

But, how come something so minuscule is having such a large impact on our well-being?

Now, I don’t want to come off as some outside entity telling you to just get off of social media and to stop reading up on all the latest gossip. Because I, too, have fallen into this trap! I’m human just like all of you, and I think a genuine connection is a cure for this incessant need to be in the know.

Growing up, I despised watching the news.

When I was just three years old, my family and I lost everything in the Cedar Fires that rampaged California back in 2007.

And while I can’t remember any of it, this gut-wrenching pit of dread fills my stomach every time I hear news of a wildfire. It led to panic attacks, sleepless nights, and all sorts of trauma that I’ve been forced to endure.

Social Media…

Now, don’t get me wrong.

I fully support the idea of using social platforms to speak on behalf of these issues, but the constant cycle of scrolling through negative news can take a toll on one’s well-being

. Many of my friends use Instagram Stories to speak out against racial injustices, gender inequality, and other issues that are plaguing our country.

But, how can we advocate on behalf of what’s going on while also taking care of ourselves?

The answer is simple: find the good. It sounds like an age-old cliche, but it truly works wonders.

Personally, I like to use Instagram Stories to share positive quotes that I’ve read, scripture that expresses my faith, or I like to simply write an uplifting message that others will see.

I may not always see the impact this has on my peers, but I have faith in the knowledge that it’s doing wonders for people.

And for those of you brave enough to take a break from the media entirely, go for it! Go take that bubble bath, listen to your carefully crafted playlist, or go take that nap you’ve been pining for.

Whatever brings you peace, go do it!

But most importantly, be gracious with yourself.

The Takeaway

Taking care of yourself and seeking the help that you need is a process, but you are never alone.

I personally want to be here for you in any way that I can be and I’m sure there are people in your life who would be more than willing to help you achieve better mental health.

If you get anything from this article, I hope it’s the knowledge that you are loved, you are valued, and you are more important than you will ever know.
